Volume III

Trips #102-135 (1995–2002)

American Wilderness and African Safaris

Volume III documents deeper U.S. explorations alongside two epic Africa trips spanning six countries. Family canoe adventures meet wildlife encounters under starlit skies, blending domestic serenity with the thrill of the continent’s vast landscapes.

Memorable Moments from the Road:

  • 1995, Trip #105 (Boundary Waters, Minnesota): Canoeing with both daughters through wilderness lakes. At night, “Alvin” the fearless chipmunk hurled himself against the tent screen, startling us awake with pounding hearts.

  • 1999, Trip #123 (Southern Louisiana): Hiked 8 miles through Barataria Swamp Preserve—bayous, marshes, bald cypress forests, boardwalks, and overlooks. Pure wilderness magnificence!

  • 2002, Trip #134 (Etosha National Park, Namibia): At 2:15 AM, heading to the loo under African stars, I sensed company. A golden jackal appeared—not a hyena! We exchanged hellos; it escorted me there and back before I wished it good night.

Previous Books

Volume I

Trips #1 - #50

At 73, I set out to relive a lifetime of journeys. Volume I (1942–1974) captures my first 50 trips across 34 countries—from mountain roads in South America to the fjords of Norway, each memory a step in a life spent discovering the world.

Volume II

Trips #51 - #101

From ski trails in Wisconsin to mountain roads in Europe, Volume II (1975–1994) captures family journeys, tradition, and discovery—from desert mesas and Hopi rituals to frosty northern adventures. The story of the road continues.

Volume IV

Trips #136 - #177

Volume IV continues the saga through 2003–2012, a decade marked by loss, remarriage, and shared discoveries. Widowed and then newly married in 2003, these journeys follow my wife and me as we introduce one another to “our” worlds—her first visits across North America and my first steps into the Philippines and a new family.

Volume V

Trips #178+

A continuation of travels from 2013 to 2016, this volume uses old diaries and photos to revisit journeys across the United States and overseas. It weaves together personal experiences, history, architecture, geography, and meaningful encounters, enriched by photos and music that bring each story to life.
