Discovering Hidden Architectural Gems in Europe
During my years exploring Europe, certain buildings stopped me in my tracks—not the famous cathedrals everyone photographs, but the quiet masterpieces hiding in plain sight.
Volume IV continues the saga through 2003–2012, a decade marked by loss, remarriage, and shared discoveries. Widowed and then newly married in 2003, these journeys follow my wife and me as we introduce one another to “our” worlds—her first visits across North America and my first steps into the Philippines and a new family.
Highlights from Volume IV:
Houseboat Honeymoon, Northern Minnesota: Evenings on Crane Lake, tying up the boat as waves lapped the hull, eagles soared overhead, and loons called. In the quiet, we wondered, “Could a bear climb aboard?”
First Time in the Philippines: Meeting my new family and riding horseback up to the caldera of Mt. Taal—steam, vistas, and a spectacular lake-filled volcano.
Israel – Sea of Galilee (Kinneret): Driving around the lake whose name means “harp” in Hebrew, sharing layers of biblical and modern history on my wife’s first visit there.
Traditions and Firsts:
Continuing the annual cross-country ski trips with both daughters.
Standing on the Prime Meridian in Greenwich Park, London, with English friends.
Gazing into the vastness of the Grand Canyon with my wife and two friends.
Roads, Battlefields, and Shorelines:
A first drive circling Lake Michigan, looking south from its northernmost tip.
Walking the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy.
Visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore, where the “Star-Spangled Banner” was born.
Reflecting at Shiloh National Military Park in Tennessee.
Wild Encounters:
Canoeing again in the northern Minnesota wilderness.
Studying a Komodo dragon—safely separated by a moat—at the Memphis Zoo.
Spotting a moose in the Grand Tetons and a perfectly posing pronghorn in Wyoming.
