Discovering Hidden Architectural Gems in Europe
During my years exploring Europe, certain buildings stopped me in my tracks—not the famous cathedrals everyone photographs, but the quiet masterpieces hiding in plain sight.
Volume II continues the journey from 1975 to 1994, capturing family travels with the children. A few European escapes mix with domestic road trips, including our cherished annual cross-country skiing tradition “up north” in winter wonderlands.
These years blend everyday family bonding with unforgettable discoveries, from Native American ceremonies to midnight mountain drives—always with the kids’ wonder at the center.
Memorable Moments from the Road:
1979, Trip #59 (Arizona): Witnessed the ancient Hopi Snake Dance atop a wind-swept mesa village. Painted dancers held live rattlesnakes, releasing them near tourists before swiftly retrieving the hissing reptiles.
1983, Trip #69 (Northern Wisconsin): Our yearly cross-country ski adventure proved parenting success: “Teaching children that winter isn’t dreaded—it’s fun, healthy, and joyful.”
1984, Trip #71 (Europe): Crossed the Spanish-French border at 10:15 PM, winding through Pyrenees mountains with dazzling night views of coastal villages twinkling like diamonds. (Would I drive those dark two-lane roads again? Probably not!)

At 73, I set out to relive a lifetime of journeys. Volume I (1942–1974) captures my first 50 trips across 34 countries—from mountain roads in South America to the fjords of Norway, each memory a step in a life spent discovering the world.

From wilderness lakes to African savannas, Volume III (1995–2002) follows adventures across America and six countries in Africa—canoeing with family, hiking through swamps, and camping under starlit skies beside curious wildlife.

Trips #136 - #177
Volume IV continues the saga through 2003–2012, a decade marked by loss, remarriage, and shared discoveries. Widowed and then newly married in 2003, these journeys follow my wife and me as we introduce one another to “our” worlds—her first visits across North America and my first steps into the Philippines and a new family.
